The Medium is the §%$&#BS@!436

The work and thoughts of the video artist Nam June Paik inspired Mar Atzin Sanchez and Fabian Bentrup to create a video that expresses how the new media has given anyone that is not an artist the possibility to easily create and share their own videos.

Today many people instead of watching a masterpiece in a museum prefer to be active creators that share images, videos and sound across the world through their social media.

These videos and sounds lose and change their meaning constantly by using the development of new technologies.

For instance, voice cloning is used in this work by using the voice of Paik to express the absurdity and contradictions present in this technological era.

Access to excessive information can create absurd realities that refer to the illusion of global collective consciousness.

This 360° video forms part of the permanent exhibition at “The Fulldome”, a project by StoryLab kiU. The artist created this video for the "Nam June Paik: I Expose the Music" exhibition. You can watch the video on the first floor at the Dortmunder U.

Die Arbeiten und Gedanken des Videokünstlers Nam June Paik dienen Mar Atzin Sanchez und Fabian Bentrup als Ausgangspunkt für diese audio-visuelle Arbeit. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Reflexion der neuen Medien als Plattformen, auf denen jeder, egal ob Künstler*in oder nicht, Videos erstellen und teilen kann.

Heute sind viele Menschen keine passiven Rezipient*innen mehr, sondern aktive Schöpfer*innen, die Bilder, Videos und Töne über ihre sozialen Medien mit der ganzen Welt teilen. Aber dieses Material verliert und verändert seine Bedeutung ständig durch die Entwicklung neuer Technologien und die ständige Neuinterpretation des Materials. Dadurch wird manchmal unbewusst die traditionelle Rolle der Kunst und der Kulturindustrie in Frage gestellt.

Der Zugang zu einem Übermaß an Informationen kann absurde Realitäten schaffen, die auf die Illusion eines globalen kollektiven Bewusstseins verweisen. Um diese Absurdität und die Widersprüche des technologischen Zeitalters zum Ausdruck zu bringen, greift "The Medium is the §%$&#BS@!436" auf Techniken der sozialen Medien und der Meme-Kultur zurück, wie z. B. das Klonen von Nam June Paiks Stimme und das Remixen von Found Footage.
